On May10th, 1864, cadets from the Virginia Military Institute left their school books on their desks and, defending their homeland from Union forces , led an infantry charge across open ground. To this day I can’t watch this scene as portrayed in The Horse Soldiers without wiping away a tear. It is an excellent use of nine minutes- if for no other reason than to see John Wayne, retreating on horseback, wave his captain’s hat in salute..
History is rarely romantic and this event was no different..
The 10th Massachusetts regiment didn’t run - they stayed behind cover and fought for their miserable lives.
Within one hour 10 rebel sons were dead or dying and 47 were wounded.
Valor, the most uncommon of virtues, was common that day..
But not by any damn Yankees..
Dixie.
