The finest fighting formation in the history of mankind was the Greek Phalanx - eight across and eighteen deep.. You locked shields and used your sixteen foot pike to embed in the abdomen, ( or at least armor,) of the enemy.. Then you pulled your short sword and - still in lockstep - thrust for the lower torso or groin, (femoral artery.)
The ONLY thing between yourself and a fatal wound to the gut from the screaming, spitting man across from you was the comrade to your right..If he screws up you’re probably both dead and the guys behind you would step into the vacancy..
That’s why the Greeks were so close to their buddies..
